Marks & Spencer slammed for eight-hour bra

Fashion retailer Marks & Spencer has caused some upset by selling a strapless bra which carries the advice that it should not be worn for more than eight hours at a time. The strapless, stick-on bra retails for £20 but carries a warning that wearing it for any length of time could cause skin irritation.

It is advertised as being ideal for those who wear backless or strapless tops or dresses. The M&S website describes the bra as giving secure support whilst being practically invisible beneath clothes. It is made entirely from polyester, but has a silicon edge. Silicone is the standard material used in stick-on bras, according to a Marks & Spencer’s spokesman.

The advice given to women by Marks & Spencer is to only wear the bra for eight hours and to take it off immediately if they start to experience any discomfort. Shirley Moss, a housewife from Kent, described the bra as ridiculous. She added that she usually wore a bra for around 12 hours a day and that having to take this one off after just eight hours was entirely impractical.

Marks & Spencer said they had issued the warning as a purely precautionary measure because a handful of female customers had said that they experienced some irritation from the silicone in some of the store’s bras.

The spokesman added that because of this the retailer had decided it was necessary to include information about the amount of silicone used in the manufacture of its bras.
